(no pun). Anyway, today I saw on E-bay a sheet of metal that is supposed to go under the bed to shield heat from the exhaust pipe. Maybe I have missed something over these months, but I have not seen such an item. Does it ring a bell with anybody? The item number on E-bay is 110095690663 just FYI. | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 322 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 322 | Hey Shmoo, Just about every major vendor such as Jim Carter, Classic Parts, Chevs of the 40's carries them.
But first check out a couple of 'Bolt sponsors such as American Classic, linked at the top of the page, or check with Mar-K that sponsors the truckbed forum.

I went up to Mar-K and found the info and ordered a stainless shield for 7 bucks. How good is the BOLT!!!! | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,682 Extreme Gabster | Extreme Gabster Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,682 | I've heard of 'em.. don't know if they were factory equipment, i've never seen an 'original' one, but usually by the time I get my eyes on an old truck, the original bed wood is long gone.
I don't guess it would hurt anything to have one on there, but on the same token, I don't think the radiated heat coming off the exhaust pipe poses that much of a threat to the bed wood, either.
an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.

I didn't bother with putting a new one in, although the original was still in place and in relatively good shape. I've still got it somewhere around here. I did re-rout the exhaust to get it away from the wood.

At least, that is where is was on my 53! | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | sounds reasonable I was remembering my fleetside, where it may have been misplaced when the wood was changed .... thinkin about it I believe it is over the axle on my panel truck same principle, the heat affects the finish Bill | | | | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 920 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: May 2004 Posts: 920 | I have the original shield on the original wood. It's above the muffler. And the shield and the wood show some heat evidence. | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | on the 62? maybe they changed things after the AD years - finally gettin it right I do think the muffler gets a lot hotter than the tailpipe Bill | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 86 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 86 | Yeah, Mar-K did suggest that maybe two of them could be needed; I only ordered one but plan to do a creeper search after it stops snowing here. Maybe the muffler should be shielded too, since the finish on the new boards is kinda green. Will report the results of my research if the snow ever melts. Shouldn't complain; Oswego got a hundred times more! | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | My '55 only had 1, and it was where the pipe went over the axle. And it was on the passenger side. Seems the pipe crossed ove to the right on the 3200/3600 that year, don't really know why. The muffler shop special exhaust that was on it was routed wrong anyway, so the shield didn't really do anything.

It comes pretty close to the wood at that point. The muffler on that old truck was only slightly larger in diameter to the pipe itself so that wasn't anywhere close to the wood. | | |
