Before I begin a parts search (IE junkyard scrounge)I want to confirm with the experts. Rumor has it that an S-10s T-5 5spd is a direct bolt up to a 68 250, true or false? Also, what is the clutch plate for this conversion. I realize I'll have to change the shifter hole (it's replacing a SM420).
With gas prices approaching $2, I could use that 5th gear.

Yes you can swap in a T-5 relatively easily. I don't think it's a direct bolt up. The mounting holes on T-5 have to be enlarged, and you'll have to run a different clutch disc (depends on number of splines). While you're in there you might as well replace the entire clutch, unless it's new. I'm about to do the same thing with my '68 and 250. I got a T-5 from a '91 Camaro which has a .63 overdrive. I'll have to overcome the shifter issues, but it'll be worth it. Take a glance through some of these links and I think some of your questions will be answered.

Also go to www.inliners.org On the left side you'll see a list. Click on "Tech Tips", and then you'll see another list. Just click on the T-5 page. Hope this helps. John

It's a rumor,it's not a direct bolt on, but it's not that big of deal. The 4 mounting holes do have to be inlarged to 1/2 in. The T5's holes are a smaller metric size. The input shaft and the input bearing retainer (the snout the throw out bearing rides on) has to be shortened. I have a 10 in. flywheel and pressure plate, but used a 9 1/2 in disc for an early model Astro van. Some of the info you'll read will tell you to use a camaro disc and grind the hub. This is not neccarry with the Astro van disc. Make sure the T5 comes out of a S10 or the shifter will be in your seat. Good luck.
