So I just bought a 64 Chevy 1/2 ton. The PO said that it had a 235 engine in it, I think it has a 250 or something. My 60 has a 235 and it looks very different from this "235". Was the style of the 235's changed when GM changed the motor mounts to the side? This one has kind of a wavy valve cover on the manifold side, whereas my older one has a valvecover with straight sides held down by 4 screws. Everything on this motor looks different from the earlier one. If anybody could help me that would be great, thanks.

It sounds like a 230/250/292 to me. Especially being a 64. Chevy stopped the 235/261 in 62.

The 194-250 engines were physically smaller than the earlier 235-261 engines. The pushrod covers were stamped with a diamond design and there were two of them. These engines were a lot lighter than the older design too. The 292 was taller than the smaller displacement engines, about the same as a 235.

okay...thanks much!!!! It has the two pushrod covers with a diamond design. This engine looks smaller than my 60 235 aswell. How can I determine if it is a 230,250, or 292? Can I find some numbers off the engine and look them up somewhere? Thanks again.

In a 64 the engine should be a 230. Start scraping the gunk off the passenger side of the block. Can't recall exactly where the casting number is, should be low and on the rear half. You're looking for a casting number, raised letters. Go to www.inliners.org and go to the casting number section.

Look for the stamped number next to the distributor

Here's a problem with casting numbers, and this is irritating as hell! My 250 block has numbers that could be a 250 or a 230. My head has numbers that could be a 250 or a 292. The only reason I knew for sure it's a 250 is because it's an original engine in a 1970, and therefore can't be a 230; plus I know some of the trucks history. The casting numbers ID just won't tell you with 100% certainty. Fortunately most of the external bolt-ons are the same on these engines except the 292 uses a longer distributor. Unless you need internal parts you shouldn't have any real problems. If you work on internals you can find out for sure when you tear it down. If it's the original 1964 engine, it's a 230, but on these old trucks one tends to find numerous surprises!

Good Luck,
Boo
