Is there supposed to be a "body by fisher" tag somewhere on my 56?

I have seen that tag, but only remember seeing it on cars!

Same here. The only trucks I know of with that tag is the El Camino.

What year did they last produce body by fisher for GM. I never heard of Fisher before this post, a true sign of my ignorance yes but, sounds like an industry leader in their time, where should I look for their tags on a GM car?

I've seen Fisher tags on cars up into the mid '80s. I'd say the last "true" Fisher bodied car was built in the 30s, as GM bought them out about that time and they became an in house body maker.

Truckstein,

In my minds eye, I see the little carriage logo in the middle of the carpet trim piece (aluminum?) above the rocker panel.

That's the one, Stuart! That carriage was the logo of the original Fisher Brotthers Custom Body Co. At one time, in order to get a scholership from GM to be a designer, part of the entrance exam was to build a scale model of that carriage, along with a concept car of your choice. They were very particular with the carriage in appearance and build quality. That alone weeded out alot of the applicants to ensure that only the best got the scholerships.

Fisher Body was originally a seperate company that GM early on bought majority ownership of, and by about 1930 they bought it all and made it a division of GM - I think GM quit tagging stuff 'Fisher' in the 70's, and in 83[?] Buick and Fisher Body were joined in one plant ... Fisher Body Division was closed in 84

Impalas were still carrying the fisher tag (door tag) at least to '84. I've seen many of those around here.

The group I was in at GM Engineering was transferred to Fisher Body Headquarters around 1990..The Fisher Employee's all remained, We were
designated CPC (Chevrolet, Pontiac, Cadillac)
Robots came in by the hundreds, and many body
styles were fabricated there..Yet, the cars were
all prototype..The bare car bodies were then shipped
to Our Department where the body was washed down with a solvent, then sprayed inside and out with a product similar to oilsum, then pushed in a bondarizer which puts the body through a 8 step
process rinsing, and washing with several different chemicals...when done, the body is baked at 350 degree's for 30 minutes..From there its primed using two 30 gal pressure pots...The body after priming is pulled out of prime area into an infra-red oven to dry...after sanding lightly it goes into spray booth for 2 coats of hi-solid enamel and 2 coats of clear...Baked at 375 degree's...Bill B.

Thanks guys. In another thread i started about trim codes on a 56, someone posted a link to a body by fisher tag, simmular to those found on the passenger side firewall under the hood of GM cars, like on my elcamino. All the vehicle's trim codes and options are listed on this tag. So If trucks dont have this tag, is all the truck's info stamped on the door post data plate? Im still stumped on what trim 234N means.

Chris, I think I was the one that linked a pic of the tag from Kieths old Chevy manual site - not a "body by Fisher" tag per se, though earlier ones did have that phrase on them - really just a 'body tag' from 'the Chevrolet Division', and yes on most they are either under the hood on the firewall or lower on the door pillar, seperate from the plate commonly called the vin plate, and different than what might be called a 'data tag', which would have GVW and HP on it - wouldn't be a suprise if the tag is missing, same as some trucks missing vin tags

Does anyone have a body/trim tag for a 1956 truck that they could post for Chris? The "tocmp" tag shown in the link by Bill (red58) is a 1951 "Body by Fisher" tag for an automobile.

Does anyone have a 1956 Truck Data Book or a 1956 Truck Restoration pack Specifications Manual with RPO codes?

As stated in the other thread , RPO 234 referred to Exterior Color though at least the first half of 1955. The "N" in 234 referred to Ocean Green exterior color. Trucks up to 1955-1st did not have trim codes, so the RPO codes (234 and N) might have changed meanings in late 1955.

I have the resto pack from GM. I think they forgot a couple pages of the RPO codes.
Here is a link to my <a href="http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a184/glamis4x4/Picture310.jpg">TAG</a>

Canadian trim tag from a 57 short step [model 1314], top center of cowl - data plate from my US built 58 , which didn't have a trim tag, and appears to never have had one - can't find any pics of trim tags from other trucks I've had

Chris,

Here are some pics of the data plates off of my '59 Chev. They should be similar to the ones for your pickup.

http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2222129100098190200NVOpMN

The Serial number and GVW Plates were located on the drivers door pillar. The Trim plate was located on the firewall (you can see this here: http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2638464810098190200FcpLCV).

similar being the key word Photo ... the Canadian tags are similar, but different ... notice the US data plate I link above compared to the CDN one you have, and the US vin tag is a 1x3" plate that just has the vin number and the word "Chevrolet", no model or engine#

Yea, I haven't ever seen a Fisher body tag on any old truck.. i've seen a lot of them on GM cars in the '70's and early 80's.. on that aluminum looking strip about where you might put your foot getting into one of those cars.

an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.
