I don't know about the newer 235's. Water Pumps
1948 3/4-Ton 5-Window Flatbed Chevrolet 34 Years. Now with a '61 261, 848 head, Rochester Monojet carb, SM420 4-speed, 4.10 rear, dual reservoir MC, Bendix up front, 235/85R16 tires, 12-volt w/alternator, electric wipers and a modern radio in the glove box.
| | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 3,458 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 3,458 | The "official" 261 water pump has dual tapped holes for heater hoses, one goes to the actual heater and one goes to the bypass port on the thermostat housing. Other than that the 235 water pump from the same year will fit and work, you just won't have a place to put that hose. There was a water pump change in '55 from the 216 style with the plate to the late style with the impeller in the block.

It has only one threaded hole on the pump and the return hose goes directly to the water neck. I have both on two different 235s. The pump with two holes and a flush fit was on my 53 and the other with the big impeller is on my 1956 era 235. 1. 235 casting number 3774186 no bypass hose outlet.
2. 261 casting number 3757282 with bypass hose.
I think both to be original.
