I recently ran into a good deal on a NV4500 5 speed transmission from a 1992 Chevrolet 2wd. My question is, can this be made to fit my 235? I have owned this transission in a 4x4 and loved it. Thoughts and experiences would be much appreciated.

Kyle,

I just snooped on these the other day. I'm not sure if they drop right in, but this info might help you figure it out.

Maybe you could compare its tech specs to a SM420 tech specs...might be the same.

It’s a great choice for our trucks. It's not a direct bolt in however it is a very popular swap so adapters are available that make it easy. Do a search here on the bolt and you will find lots of info. Stuart left you a good link to Novak above. You may also wish to check out http://www.advanceadapters.com

From my former life working on jeeps I know the nv 4500's are probably a little beefy for a 235. a 4.6 liter stroker pushing about 250/350 would be on the brink of blowing a Ax15 and loooking to swap to a NV 4500. You can probably save yourself some space, weight, and money by looking into a NV3500.

Hell if you going through all that trouble, look into the S10 5 speed, can find them dirt cheap, will handle the power and LOTS of people have them behind GM 6's

Depending on how you plan to use the truck. If you are going the be hauling loads I would use the NV4500 not sure about the 3550 I know that they where used in jeeps and some of them have been changed to 4500s. The T-5 is a great choice also and where used in 4.3 Lt S-10s but the 5spd box used in 4cld and 60*V6 S-10s is not a T-5 and barely up to the task of the 4cld S-10. The plus of the T-5 comes if you building a rod out of you truck it will shift more like a car. The NV4500 is going to shift like a pickup. Advance Adapters has a installation manual that covers both the NV4500 & 3550 in great depth. If you have found a 4500 at a good price I would go for it.

Oh fredoly thank you I fixed the link.

If memory serves me... the first year of the nv4500 for gm used a different bolt pattern than the later gm and dodge versions. It may very well bolt up to a 235 bellhousing. I am pretty sure that the bellhousing will have to be bored in the middle as the bearing retainer would be much wider than that of a sm420.

I am doing this swap in my 1940 gmc. I elected to use the dodge version from 94-97. The dodge version has a 1 inch longer input shaft which makes it a very ez conversion with an adapter plate. I needed to use the stock bellhousing because the brake and clutch pedals mount to that.

Another thing to consider is the speedometer hookup. Gm versions of this transmission used a velocity sensor (electronic) and would have to be converted to work with stock guages. the 94-97 dodge versions have a speedo driven gear which could be used for a mechanical speedo.

I think the Nv4500 is an excellent choice in our stovebolts if you are going to do some heavier hauling, or plan to build that 235 for more power. You have a truck, why not use it like one.

Good Luck!

Wow, thanks for all of the replies! It's so nice to be able to ask a question and get a bunch of answers. I have thought about the t-5 swap, and it would be nice, but I think that I want a little more 'truck' in my truck. I also plan on getting my 235 built up in the next year or two. The NV4500 is a stout piece of hardware and seems to make more sense than a lighter duty transmission. I also like that I would be able to still have a compund low first gear. The two things that I want to have in my truck are workability and driveability. The 4500 would give me an overdrive for the highway and a low gear for working and hauling. Thanks for the help, I will get to work on figuring this project out.
