I have a 1936 chev truck and I have recently cleaned up the fuel tank. Can somebody advise me. The steel plate in side is this a baffle? or has it dislodged it just floats and there is a cork ball inside is this to stop the tank from overfilling by floating to the filler hole when its full?

My 38 has a "U" shaped baffle in it to keep the gas from sloshing around & making the gas gauge dance. The sending unit is located inside the baffled area. The only cork I've seen is on the end of the sending unit arm. Someone else will have to help you with that one. Welcome to the 'bolt Shane.
