Well I took the gas tank out of my 51, 3600 this weekend. The truck had been setting in a field for years before I got it. I drained the most foul smelling gas out of it you could imagine, five gallons worth. Now one end of the tank, the end opposite of the filler, weights about 5 to 10 pounds more than the filler end. Any guesses as to what is in there weighing it down? It won't roll or shift around when I tilt the tank. Guesses?!!

Dirt would be my guess.

Well.. nasty gas soaked dirt that's now some kind of mud paste kind of crap.

You may have to get the filler neck off the tank and peek in there with a stick and a flashlight to get a better idea of what it might be.

Hardened shellac. That gas has sat for a long time. Buy or retrofit a new tank or your carb and motor will be sorry.

What ever it is Rick I'd sure plan on spending $150 for a new tank. I have one that had rust in it and the PO said he flushed it out, "real good". Now about every week or so I have to pull the glass bowl and clean the screen. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I start smelling gas in the cab.

If your tank has baffles in it, looking in the sending unit hold may not tell you much. I'm in agreement that it's probably old gas that's turned into varnish. Normally I'd recommend cleaning it with acid & recoating the inside but if there's that much in the tank and if new tanks are available for your truck, buying a new tank is probably the best way to go. I didn't have an option with my 38, new tanks aren't available. If you're determined to keep the original tank, there is an outfit that splits the tank, cleans & repairs it, welds it back together then coats it. click
