If you measure the outside diameter of the of the cylinder and say it's 4 1/2 inches, that would indicate a bore of probably 4". Now with the radius squared (2X2) times 3.14 you get 12.56 square inches of piston area. If your pump puts out a 1000psi then you have 12,560#'s or 6 tons of lifting power. It's a lot better if someone knows from experience because this way you have to know the pump pressure and cylinder specs.

He explains how the force a cylinder developes is calculated but not how it is applied. That is where we need to know what type of hoist you have, i.e., a direct push or lift arm frame of some sort. And of course one must know the cylinder size and pump pressure. Also we need to know the where the hoist is attached and the overhang from the hinge location. Simple, Huh? ...well it's really not as bad as it sounds. The easiest thing to do is post a picture of it or e-mail me the information above. FWIW..modern pick-up truck hoists are 3 ton capacity on an 8' body length. (Tomcoe..once in a while they let me out of the Engine & Driveline forum for good behavior (?) to stroll around some of these other rooms..  | | | | | Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 254 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 254 | that F*#d that the hoist is in has a 8 ft long bed and no overhang beyond the hinge point i'm not at home right now so i can't really measure it nor will i be home for a while (i'm in wisconsin going to school, but if i was to take educated guess i'd say that the case is about 4-5 in. wide and the ram not being much smaller but i'm thinking about getting ahold of a 63 Chevy 2 ton COE and make a flatbed on it and i want to know if this hoist i have will be able to lift 4-5 tons, i'm gona make the flatbed myself i want it to be 24 ft long 16 ft before the hinge and a 8 ft overhang if the hoist will work then i just have to more problems where is the best place to mount the hoist and how do you do the hinge at the end of the frame? also the hoist has an electric pump can i keept it like that or should i switch it to a pto powered one (that 63 COE has the pto setup on it just no pump, it had a 16ft grain bed on it with hoist) thanks Nate | | |
