From the 1949 Chevrolet Truck Data Book, under the 3604 Standard Equipment, is listed a, Tool Box – Under Seat, 50” x 19 1/2” x 6”
Was this discontinued in 1950? My 1950, 3600 does not have a tool box under the seat, in fact, you can’t even see under the seat except from the back with an inspection mirror.

Also, we have been discussing the fact that there is no mention of a jack & lug wrench nor is there any listing for a hand crank, which the is actually a provision for on my truck.
If anyone has either one of these items, I would sure appreciate a picture of them.

On my 54 the seat lifts from the front. Alot of stuff was in there. Nothing original. I had a 48 that still had the notches for the handcrank on the front pulley but there wasn't alined up access from the front. I would suspect 49 didn't come with the crank. On my 38 the jack and crank were shoved down beside gas tank under the seat.

My '52 seat lifts out from the front as well.
I found a little tool box in there but it wasn't original.

The space under the seat IS the tool box.
Your truck would have come with a jack and lug wrench.
But not the hand crank, that was discontinued sometime earlier. Yes, there is still a hole in the grille and fitting on the dampener for it, guess they did not bother to eliminate those. Another item you might be interested in was the tool kit, but you did not mention that, it also was eliminated as stock and became optional in 1949 I believe.

I just went out and checked that and the seat does have two clips in the front and if you pull them up the seat will slide out from under the back. Not very convienient but I guess you could concider that a tool box. Unfortunatly there isn't a jack under there. Brian, you wouldn't have a picture or ilistration of the jack and tool kit by any chance, would you?
I don't think you could get a crank in there either, the core support sits a little low, and is in the way when you sight through the hole.
I'd still like to see a crank, it wouldn't be to hard to fab one of them if I knew what the business end looked like.

Right you are Paul, thank you, pg93, and only $65 plus shipping and handling.
Now if I could find a picture of what the business end looks like, I could get the torch out and fab one, just as a conversation piece mind you. I'd be willing to bet the original was forged and the reproduction ones are round stock with an engagement fitting welded on the end.
Was the original jack a scissor jack and if so, what did its crank look like?
I pulled the seat completely out this morning, by the way , thanks guys, so I could check out why the seat runners were so stiff and it turns out they are just dry. I doubt if they had ever been lubed in the last 56 years, after all, how many of us lube the seat runners when we do an oil change/grease job.
No tools, but I did find one very pleasant surprise under the seat, there is NO RUST, other than a little fine spotty surface rust where the metal was bare.
