#21736 02/26/2004 1:30 AM | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 141 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 141 | I have a '64 chevy stepside, and I want to upgrade to disc brakes up front, and 5 lugs all around. I've bought a '75 for parts, and have taken the front end and rear end out.
My question is, is there any way to swap the rear end 'tubes' on either side of the center rear end housing? If I can do that, I won't have to grind off the old rear end's brackets and weld them to the new rear end. I think the tubes are pressed in. Can they be swapped?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. | | |

I don't think the axle tubes come out easy and you are probably better off removing any necessary brackets and welding on to your new axle. I just put a 14-bolt in my '55 out of an '89 3/4 ton and it only took about an hour with a cutoff wheel, grinder and air chisel to remove some spring perches and a few other attachments. The fit-up and welding took a lot longer. Pinion angle was the key. | | |

I've swapped a tube on a motorhome rear end that was not available anywhere, and it's a real hassle. You'll be better off modifying the spring perches. You'd need to do a complete teardown on the rear end, drill/grind the welds out, push the tubes out of both housings, and reinstall them precisely in the right position, then reweld everything. I wouldn't do it again for twice what I got paid the last time!
