The 1950 Sub that I just bought has a replacement engine that I washed up today, and I noticed oil lines coming from the front of the eng block, splits into 2 with 1 going to the oil filter (which is attached to the side cover bolts), and the other line returning to the rear of the block and in. There is a tee with a smaller ID tube going to the oil gauge ( 0-30-60 ) I thought the sixes were babbit pounders until late 53 (Auto tran) and all of 54. I have no idea with the GMC line. The lines are made from copper tubing. This engine number is A228460110 it has a crankcase vent tube with oil fill cap AND a valve cover with an oil fill spout/tube/ Thanks.

GMC Sixes from the 228 on (as far as I know) were all full-pressure oilers.

If I'm full of it, someone'll come in and let us know!

That would be nice, my 50 Belair is a babbit pounder and the oil gauge reads 0-15-30 and runs in the 12-15 range. If it would ever blow it would become a 327/350 Seems GMC and Cheve were on different pages in some respects. Thanks Brenden

From 1939 to 1959 or 1962 the GMC family of engines...228,236,248,256,270,and 302 engines were all full pressure engines with precision bearings. The GMC castings also used a higher nickle content which will allow them to take higher rpm than a chevy. Maximum reccomended speed of the engine is 3400 rpm.

Performance parts for these Jimmy engines are available. They are on the pricey side. I am building a 302 for my 1940 GMC and expect to be in the 225- 250 hp range. These 6s are bulletproof engines and can take quite a bit of abuse and still get you home.

If you must go the bent 8 route, I suppose the 327/350 would be an excelent combination. Don't sell your 6 banger short. They are still highly sought after engines, and have a great sound, and smell! grin

In the end this is your truck, and you could do to it whatever you want. So Have fun with it. Whatever way you go, there are people here that have done it, are doing it, or will do it, and are ready to help.

Cheers
John

Thanx John. I intend to keep the six in this one. I like the feel and sound of them. It is all good news. The V8 combo would be for the Belair if it ever dies. It seem to want to live forever.
