well.

after spending my friday night playing music with some friends in a basement, and a week of classes, i decided to get going on the truck again.

today, was the firewall, as the title indicates.

after taking the heater off, i discovered a small bit of rust. not alot. only a small bit, but enough to make me want to repair it.

patch clamped in. i know they're plastic spring clamps. but they came off before they were melted...too bad.

and. thats about it. took about..3 hours. yeah, i took a while. its okee.

and don't laugh about fluxcore. it works. for the most part...lol.

Nothing that touching it with a grinder won't make prettier! (if you care) Plus flux core does work outside in the wind too.

yes, it does. we had about 5-10 mph winds yesterday, and it seemed to work out just find.

ugly? a bit. but, i knocked them down some, and since it's ging to get covered with the heater blower anyway...who cares! lol

Flux core is all I have and it has served me well. I have cut out quite a bit of rusted metal on my truck and welded in new patches with it. Takes a bit of grinding and a small amount of body filler to smooth it all out but it sure does work.

sweet.. maybe i'll get motivated and give welding another try...

my father just knocks the high spots down with a grinder, then fills the rest in with RTV...

I hate to burst your bubble, but unless this is a fair weather truck, you may want to consider cutting your repair piece back out.
There is a trough that directs the rain water across the top of that 4" hole and down the side, away from the kick-panel air vent. You can see part of that trough rusted out, in the top of the first picture. Without repairing the trough, the heater fan will pull the water into the heater suitcase and the water may also run into the kick-panel vent.
There are actually so many pieces of tin, spot welded together in there, that it is hard to visualize.
Coincidence that I just cut the inner part of that area out, on mine today. I don't have a rust problem. I'm putting in a non GM AC and I have to reshape the inside of the firewall, as well as eliminate the kick-panel air vent. It's always fun to weld upside down on my back. As I was cutting one piece away, I cut through into the inside bottom of that trough and left a 2" slit that I have to close up. That 4" hole will be closed off. Then a new upper inside corner piece and vent cover welded in.

and to richard, i checked out the trough..shelf...thing...

it's not in bad shape. and when i take more time to look at it, i'll fix it. namely, by welding it to the patch, so as to seal it off from the heater core area.

or, atleast thats the idea.
