well i did a search for this and i am sure it has been talked about, my bolt is a 6 volt, my charger is a 12 volt5 2 amp unit, it goes buzzzzz real load when i put it on at the lowest setting, yes i did disconect the cables for fearing i would blow the head lamps out!!!

You may have fried your gas gauge. Everything else is pretty tolerant of 12v... The Lightbulbs would only be an issue if you had them on when the charger was running.

Get one that does six volt. A cheapish good one is available at your FLAPS, or at Meijer/Walmart/et cetera.
