Help!
I can't find replacement brake shoes for my 51 3/4 ton. This truck has Huck type brakes and I can't find them. Any know about this or a reasonable relining service in central Fla.

Either Jim Carters or American Classic Truck parts can supply the shoes for you and very reasonable in price.

Thanks for the reply, I can get the shoes for the rear of my truck from Jim Carters, I just thought $84.75 with a $75 core charge was a bit steep.

I didn't realize that there was that much difference in the price of shoes for "Hucks". Mine ran about $25 per axle with a $15 core charge. Got all of mine from Jim Carters.

It seems the [[[1951 3/4]]] ton has an unusually expensive brake system to rebuild.

Aloha, my local brake "guru" used modern, **** (gasp) 4WD brakeshoes with no other modifications on my '59 Lbed fleetside Apache that carries a '58 alaskan camper weighing approx. 1000 lbs and it stops on a dime, no heating/fading or anything, very sweet, it also has hydra-vac powerbrakes but the shoes made a killer differance, i'll ask which ones they were and post it IF he'll reveal his trade secret. They really work good.

If the shoe cores aren't damaged get them relined. Another option is to replace the entire brake system with Bendix from a 52 or later. On the fronts you disconnect the brake line and unbolt the backing plate, then replace from a donor. IIRC, the bendix front shoes are available from a local parts store, along with new cylinders. Rears need to be relined.

Try Kanter Auto Parts . They have a 4 wheel kit with all shoes for $140 plus $75 core. I have used them and was very satisfied.

When I put new front shoes on my '48 3/4T, my parts store found an Oregon company which was getting rid of all their old shoes. They were $17. I never realized that these Huck shoes were so special. I should have bought more.

For the brake relining, consider going to a large diesel truck stop or a local COOP shop. They might know of a place that does that type of work. I had my clutch for my 37 chevy redone and had other light duty car brakes redone at the same shop when there main work was big trucks.

Good luck.

Brent
