my pass side rear brake is locking up when applying light pressure. only the rear pass side. I replaced the cylinder with a rebuilt last weekend. actually i went through two rebuilts because the first one leaked. the truck drove fine for a 100 mile trip and then for a few days of light driving. now it will lock up and screech on slight brake pressure. its not leaking i already checked... the funny part though is in the past few days the locking up has come and gone. i noticed the problem yesterday morning. when i left work yesterday problem was still present but after a few hours i ran an errand and it was gone. this mornign it was fine for awhile then began occuring again. any ideas here guys? i just added disc up front a few months ago and most of the lines were replaced. i have a small section of rubber line but it is inbetween the steel line that runs from the M/C and the T at the rear end so i think if that was the problem it would affect both rear wheels.
the rear drums are self adjusting from a 79 caprice. the m/c is new. i also checked to make sure the parking brake is disengaging and it is.
help | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | There is a posibilty that the problem is in the left side, if the wheel cylider is sticking or the shoes not adjusted up proper. That could cause the right side to brake first. Another thing to check is for contamination of the shoes. If the right side got contaminated when the wheel cylinder leaked, they will be grabby. There isn't much you can do to fix that other than replacing the linings, if the aren't soaked too bad you can try cleaning them with some brake cleaner.

When it happened to me I cleaned the shoes the best I could, then purposly drove around with my foot very lightly on the brake pedal trying to wear the contamination off. After a couple of days the problem went away. If you get brake fluid on the shoes, no matter how well you clean you will have some lock-up for a while. The alternative is to replace the shoes. The come & go lock up is a bit of a puzzle but should eventually go away if it is brake fluid contamination.

| | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 227 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 227 | ok... thanks fgor the suggestions. after the 17 mile commute home yesterday i checked for leaking fluid... to my surprise the left drum had a small amount of fluid that had seeped out and down the wheel. now after coming back to work the brakes worked fine and dosent appear to be any more fluid from the left drum... will see how she acts tonight and will replace the left cylinder if any problems occur. The difference in liquids is obvious. If the seal is leaking it will enter the brake and get onto the shoe. Hopefully it is a cylinder and not the axle seal.
This is a good time to remind everyone to make certain the breather on the rear axle is free and not clogged. | | |
