Are you talking the front axle assembly?

The complete front axle spring assembly should be the same BUT the Drag Links are different between the 47-52 and the 53-55 1st series. The 47-52 use the type with the tapered tube ends that have springs inside with ball cups and threaded end plugs. The 53-55 1st type uses the late model tie rod end style. This style uses a threaded stud permanently installed within the cast drag link arm.

Hope this helps.

Russntustin,

My web/ftp site has been offline for several days and I was unable to post this picture from a 1954 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual. It shows the old style tie-rod ends for 1/2 ton trucks in '54. GMC might have been different. As stated above, most aftermarket replacements are the new-style, with screw on ends.

Tim,
My repair manual has that same picture of the two different tie end rods but I can't read it as well due to accumulation of oily finger prints over the past few years. wink
