Still don't know how to post pics so maybe the link will work. Have you ever seen a dual point set-up such as this 327 in a 55 2nd has.

The truck is for sale thru a place in NC. I emailed them asking about the set-up but as yet haven't heard from them.

Chev did have a dual point dist available in the 327 years, used on vettes I believe - Mallory made one too

The link didn't work for me but a dual point setup is not unusual. There were several company's that used a dual point dist. Ford,GM,Chrysler,and Datsun used them there may be others.

Thats a wierd setup,have seen many dual point distributors,but never 2 distributors.If your gonna update the best way to go is an HEI dist.I replaced the dual point dist.in my 350 SB,with an HEI.Have never had any trouble with it.

I hate to be negative, Folks, but I suggest you guys with point type distributors store them away somewhere. I did. You know an EMP type detonation will knock out those delicate electronic distributors.

this post has got nothin to do with point distributors vs something else, kid, it has to do with what the heck is this??

that's NOT a factory vette 327 setup Bruce, this is - even the highest rated original 327's had one dual point distributor

never seen anything like it or any parts advertised to make it fit the block - what's running the front one? where do all those plug wires go? who makes an intake that configuration?? you can see there's single wires on single plugs, but there's 16 wires from the 2 distributors! I'd be interested in hearing the story if they come back with one

That's a dual-distributor setup. My head ain't believin what my eyes are seein. In order to use this, you'd have to have a second gear at the front of the cam and two plugs per cylinder. The last time I looked at a smallblock head, there wasn't a heck of a lotta room to put another spark plug orifice. And I don't see anything that looks vaugely like 2 plugs or 2 wires near each stock location.

Admittedly I haven't seen anything like every setup that's available but what I HAVE seen is show cars with a lotta non-functional stuff on them to look kool.

Ok. So I called the salesman and he said it was a "special race car setup" that used a special timing cover and a gear that bolted on to the front end of the cam to drive the front distributor. He also said that the rear distributor is not being used. There's only one plug per cylinder. He suggested removing all the trick stuff and puiting a stock timing chain cover on and then using the rear distributor only.

I sure don't think I'd pay $30 grand for it. Especially with what appears to be puke-green variegated shag carpeting from the 70s.

But they say that there's an *** for every seat.

hahaha a very spendy way to have the distributor more accessible for setting the points!

I'm like you other guys, I never seen anything like that. I first wondered if it was just a dummy put on there for looks somehow. I've never seen one like that either. Kind of hard to believe.There is only one plug wire on each plug.I think it's more of a show !!!!

That's definitly a weird setup. I know a local rodder that has a front mount ditributor setup like that on a small block in a '39 Pontiac. His only has a front distributor with a dummy shaft in the back to run the oil pump.

Valve train technology has come a long way. Years ago the components were heavier and they used massive triple valve springs. Roller cam followers were heavy and they would add springs inside, under the head. All of these springs plus a high volume oil pump were twisting the cam and changing the dist timing. This was before crank triggers, and the front dist was one solution.
