I have a 1950 Gmc 1 ton pick up with a 9ft box and it had no rear bumper when I got it, Did all trucks have rear bumpers?

No. It seems most didn't. Consequently original rear bumpers are more difficult to find than front ones. A lot of people, myself included, put a front bumper on the rear but the curve often interferes with the license plate. The original rear bumpers are not as curved at the ends.

gas dude - You are the only guy I know besides myself who has a 1950 GMC 1-ton with 9-foot pickup bed. Good work!

I read somewhere that the bumpers that did come on some trucks were removed so farmers could back right up to the loading dock/grain bin...

I purchased an aftermarket bumper and next will buy the filler pan/splash pan to go between the bumper and bed which isn't stock but I would like to have for safety and asthetic reasons.

The rear bumper was an option, even on 1/2 tons, up to the early '80's. It's not unusual to see dealer installed aftermarket bumpers on older trucks. The AD rear bumper is much flatter than the front, I've only seen 1 1ton with a rear bumper. Even most TF trucks I've seen don't have factory rear bumpers. That's 1 option mine actually had, along with turn signals and the 8 leaf spring option.

I hear you on the $$$$ issue. If my truck didn't need to be named "Lurch", it would have been called "wallet hoover" by now.

All 1/2 & 3/4 tons with pick-up beds were to come with rear bumpers the 1 tons only with front. so sayath the Chevrolet Salesmen's Data Book.

You must be reading the 49 data book. In 51 the rear bumper became optional, according to the red book. But that may only apply to 1/2 ton trucks. I recall reading once that rear bumpers on the bigger trucks were not standard equipment.

And,I might add, the 1 ton bumpers were made from a heavier guage steel. I put a 1 ton front bumper on my 50, it's about twice as thick as a 1/2 or 3/4 ton bumper.
