I'm not big in the brains department so I have a stupid question for you guys.
I have a 327 small block in my '66.The alternator bolts to the exhaust manifold that I want to replace with headers so I need to move it.The alternator mount kit I want is only compatable with a long water pump.Mine is short.I would like to chrome dress this engine so buying a chrome water pump is no problem.
Here is the stupid question. Can I simply put a long water pump on this motor with just pulley changes?I have lots of clearance to the radiator so maybe bringing the fan closer would be better for cooling.
Thanks,
Daryl

Yes, you can change to a longer water pump and pulleys, however, the mounting bracket(s) for the alternator and other accessory pumps must also be changed or moved forward and redrilled so that they will be aligned with the pulleys.

I think Mr. Gasket has a bracket to mount your alternator to headers. It'll put it in the same location it's in now.I could be wrong about who makes it,but it should be easy to find.I used one a while back on a '55 chevy, and I found it on the chrome accessories board at the local parts store.(Actually, the one I got was for a generator but it was easy to make it work with the alternator.)

you also might want to poke around

http://www.summitracing.com

I did a search over there with this search string:

alternator header bracket small block chevy

and it produced 15 items.

this may or may not help...

I'll trade you two long waterpump setups for one short one.
