Howdy,

My wife and I are traveling from Charleston, SC. to Prince Edward Island in Canada. We plan on going through D.C. and New York City, Boston, etc. up the east coast. ( We are traveling in the '48 chevy 1/2 ton truck. It's in better shape than our family car and seems like a great nostalgic idea right now...
Has any one been that route who can give me some tips? A lot of the map programs seem to take you through toll roads etc. so I am just looking for the best and maybe some senic coastline roads etc.

I am jealous, tht sounds like a great roadtrip. Being in an old bolt only sweetens the deal. Have a safe and fun trip.

If you come up 95 you'll pass right through Fredericksburg (between Richmond & DC). There's lots of Civil War history here, Washington's boyhood home, etc. You could also stop by my instructor's place just north of Richmond on 360 to watch some hang gliding (www.blueskyhg.com). Obviously lots to see in DC, and maybe some in Richmond too. Be sure to time your travels up 95 during light traffic.

Coming up thru Bawstin, if you're on 95, unless you have a burning desire to drive thru the city, best bet is to stay on 95 which loops around the city.

If time is an issue, pick up 84 in CT to 90E to 290N to 495N where it joins 95 nawth again up near the NH border. A bit shorter and you avoid city traffic.

If you have time, you can stop by The Old North Bridge in Concord (Shot heard round the world) and other historic sites. Of course, you're near our store then so stop by and have coffee on me.

BTW, Charleston is a sister city of Boston. Has a similar charm to it. Apparently lot's of folks from Boston vaca'd down there in the past.

In Virginia, for sure, and other states as well consider rout 17, rout 11, and 301 I know they are "slower roads" but a nice pace for an old truck. If you plan to take the interstate I think I would avoid 95.

About 2 years ago I drove my 52 1 ton 8,000 miles around the country, at about 52 MPH. I was on the interstate for a fair amount, about 60% and it was just fine out west, but when the traffic was heavy going north on the west coast I jumped over to the slower roads. I think you will find that you don't wnat to be on the interstate going north (or south) on the east coast either. However, if you like to drive at night, I do, the interstate is a good way to make time in an old truck.

If you dont want to follow I95 I81 which is more west is a good route.then pick up I88 here in Binghamton NY which will take you thru Albany NY and then to Boston.Kind of a round about way.When do plan on going?We still have winter up here in the north.Its been very mild but you never know about mother nature or any woman for that matter. (just kidding)

We plan on leaving charleston (temp today 75 or so) in June - the 22 probably.
we expect to be on the road two weeks...
The '48 chevy
has a '55 235 with "modern '70's 3 speed and 85 6 lug blazer rear end-- all that to say the 1/2 ton can cruise at around 65-70 if I get the wheels balanced again...

You,ll really enjoy P.E.I. some call it paradise in June. Also if the 48 can take it you should drive around Cape Breton, it's just like Scotland, have a good trip you'll really enjoy it and don't eat too much lobster. There's a ferry at St John New Brunswick you can take across to Digby Nova Scotia via the Bay of Fundy and drive up to PEI that way. It's quite scenic. Bob T
