| | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 738 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 738 | i want to make a trailer to match my truck. i am thinking about finding a 60-66 and cutting it up and making a trailer out of the bed. i am not going to do it to a nice one or a fixable one. has anyone done this before? how do you do it exactly? i want it to match my truck, i think it would be cool. i assume that you cut the frame and then add some crossmembers and weld a neck on to it? i do not know what to do really...any ideas. would a long bed be better than a short bed? i want to use it for a work trailer and i think that it would be cool to have it match my pickup. anyway, what do ya'll think?

The best way to make a trailer out of a truck bed is to take a look at a few trailers that others have made. Most of the trailers I've seen have pulled the cab and front end off the frame and cut notches in the inside of the frame rails just in front of the front of the bed. Then you bend the frame rails into the center until they meet. Then you cut the excess frame off and weld the frame rails together and weld a trailer hitch tongue onto the joined frame rails. This is very over simplified. Again, look at a few trailers that others have built and copy the one that you like the best. Been there, etc....

Converting a truck box to a tow-behind trailer was pretty widely done up here in farm country. You may find one ready to go in your own back yard. I turned the bed over and set the frame on it then welded them together. It even tilts. I had to shorten the tongue some but you don't want it really short. The shorter the tongue the harder to back up. Be sure to use a trailer that accepts large wheels. It'll look goofy on 12" tires. | | |
