| | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 14 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 14 | Bought a chevy pickup with a 1954 235 engine.It has a 3speed on the floor and a open driveshaft.I want to get the moter redone this winter and go over the complete drive train.I know the drive shart is not original, but the tranny and the rearend I dont know? Did they make a 3speed?Ande the rearend I would like to gear up because it pulls 3grand at 55mph.

If it has an open drive then both the trans and differential are not original. You could have the original rear axle but with an open drive the third member could be from a bit later truck. All 49 half tons had closed (torque tube) drive.
Bill | | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 14 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 14 | I do not have the motor pulled yet because I broke my leg.I want to do a full restore but I want to drive it in summer so I thought if I do the drive train this winter(late start) and then next winter do a down to the frame restore.Want to keep the truck as original as I can yet make it hiway drivable and trust worthy.Buy the way I am in love with this truck.Dont tell my wife!

Are you sure it's a '49? Hey guys, didn't the early '47s have the floor-shifted 3-speed? (and was it a closed driveshaft?)

If the truck has an open driveshaft, then the transmission, driveshaft, and rear end are not original. However, that combination might have gearing that will give you better hiway driving.
1947 was the last year that the three-speed transmission used floor shift, and the last year that the 1/2 ton parking brake was activated by a lever next to the floor-shifter. After-market floor shifter adapters were available for many 3-speed transmissions (I remember them in JC Whitney catalogs).
