What's it exact purpose; I know distrubting grease to the distributor, but why? Why isn't this done on modern cars? Only curious... if I was a cat, I'd be dead a loooong time ago.

It lubes the distridutor shaft that has sprial grooves milled into it to distribute the grease along the shaft. I turn it a couple of times every month and refill mine every tuneup.
