Hi all,
I have decided to pull my cab off the frame of my 1954 Chevy 3100 pickup 1/2 ton to redo the brakes, paint the frame, and patch the floorpans. It is unbolted and just sitting on the frame without the seats or doors. How many people am I going to need to get this thing off?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This is step 1 in the beginning of a LONG restoration. Thanks!

there was a guy on here in one of the forums that made a cab lift, check the tool section. he used an engine hoist and some lumber to make himself a really nice little cab jack. check it out.

2 really can't do it, voice of experience!! Put a 4X4 thru the cab, hook a chain around both ends and use a chain hoist. Made a dolly out of 4X4 on old cast iron casters. Roll it all around the shop easily.

I lifted mine off and back on using a cherry picker strapped to the 4 corners with a tow strap, and stabilized with bungee cords.
I had to pick it up and set it down several times before I had the straps adjusted just right to lift it straight up level without it tipping.

I did it with 2, my son and I. He is 6'3" and I am no light weight either. With two it was very hard. I would recommend 3 or 4 if you can get them. Don't take a chance of hurting yourself or damaging the cab.

I screwed 2 lag rings into the garage joists and put a nylon sling thru the rings and hooked it to a cheap come along. I ratcheted it up by myself and rolled the chassis out to the driveway. Then I set it down on a cab dolly and drank all the beer myself.

I'm the cablifing carpenter. This is what happens when all the buddies who have helped me heft the cab in the past know better than to come around. I wouldn't do it with less than 4 guys and I'm a big guy.

I'm planning on building a metal version.

You did not mention the steering column. It needs to be removed FIRST. And do not think you can remove the column from the steering box. You need to remove the steering wheel, and column shifter if you have one, and unbolt the box from the frame rail and then remove the box and column as a unit.
But if you remove everything from the cab, it is not all that heavy. But if you decide to leave things such as glass, better get 3 buddies.

The cab on my 46 weighs 600 pounds. I would go with 4 people. But i really do like that picture that50-3600-guy has-THAT IS HELPFUL!How much did that cost you, and BTW your truck is looking awsome! Any way I know i can lift 200-250 pounds of truck at least for a minute, but if you have a device to move it around you are much better off. Dmage to you or help would be permanent back problems. grin frown

KC,
I think that you are a very lucky man! Photo 5 appears to show the center of gravity for the cab, well out past the outboard wheels of your lift!

I reinstalled mine by myself. I used a cherry picker and four motorcycle straps. It takes a couple of tries to get it to lift level but only takes a few minutes. My picker has 4 casters on it too which helps when going back together.

Truckernix: It's lifting from the normal end of the crane so the weight is all where it should be, and the crane is rated for way more than the weight of my cab. When I had it up in the air like that it was amazingly stable. I rolled the crane around on my rough driveway and it never tilted, I was pretty carefull to make sure I was at the center of gravity front to back and side to side. Could be a funny angle of the shot.
