He is stressing out over the gas this thing drinks. We want to keep the 6-lug axle. I'm thinking a ration of around 3.08 would work well. Is there a simple (cheap) gear swap available? Are ring and pinion combinations available?

Alternately you could put in a 700R4 tranny, it may be easier in the long run.

Get about 14 mpg on a good day. Too bad you're so far away, this winter I will be replacing it with a 3.42 posi 12 bolt rear end.
