I bought a complete front end and doors off a 51 1.5 ton and wanted to use them on my 51 half ton truck. At the time I didn't know there were wider. Can they still be used on the smaller truck or are they too wide. Anybody done it? I hope they can be used as they are in great shape. I hope start on this truck in a few months .

James,

They would bolt to the cab, but I think it would end there. I have a 1 1/2 ton myself so I know those suckers are huge. The hood would have to be changed along with the grill...it's the whole wrap or nutin! If you did overcome ALL those obstacles, it would be, pardon my french, a bastard looking affair. eek

Sell them and get the fenders for a 1/2 to 1 ton and have it done right.
Or, section the fenders to remove about two inches. It may give your truck a unique look.

If you have time to wait, those fenders should sell for more than the 1/2 Ton ones will cost to buy. That is because they are harder to find.

You're sure about the hood???? I've got hood one from a 1/2t and hood from one that came with the next larger fendered truck and they look the same!

I want to use the one that came with the larger truck cuz it's in great shape.

Help!

Hey Jeff,
I could use some big bolt body parts (say that three times really fast). Got access to anything still? I keep finding trucks but the last two were too good to scrap. I need all the sheet metal for one of my 48's, which is a 1 1/2 ton or larger, but could get by with just a clip.

The hoods are different...the light-duty truck hood has a rounded lower rear corners, the medium-duty truck hood comes to a point to accomodate the larger fenders.

This is what I do know! The hood center strip from a 1 1/2 is much longer than the pickups. The hood emblem is much larger than the pickup.

Look in the parts books like CD or Carter and you will see the application ends with, I think the 3/4 ton....mucho grande smile

Thanks for the replies. I have learned to do my research before buying next time. Since I am a pac rat, I'll hold on to them and possibly find a truck to use them on down the road.

You are WRONG again Bill !!!

The 1 1/2 & 2 ton conventional hoods are larger than the 1/2 3/4 & 1 ton hoods.

The grill bars on the 1 1/2 & 2 ton trucks only look like the 1/2 3/4 & 1 ton bars.

They are the same width... but the big truck grill bars are 1/2 " taller.

Here's a pic showing the difference from the side. hoods.jpg
All the front sheetmetal is bigger.
The Grill bars themselves are taller but can be made to work on a half ton with the right parts, the top bar will just smile smile a little. Most people won't even notice.
And if you wanna see some really big sheetmetal look at what was on the really big trucks. GMC620Hood.jpg

I think KCMongo has been messing around in Photoshop! I put a 1/2 ton hood on my 4400 truck and it fit nicely...right into the engine
compartment. grin

The AD hoods are the same from 1/2 ton through 1 ton to my knowledge. The 1.5 ton and larger trucks have a hood that is wider, longer and has a different contour at the back corners.

Then the parts books are wrong (or they just don't care about 1-tons). 1/2-ton to 1-ton front sheetmetal is the same. Beds and running boards are all different lengths, but the rear fenders and tailgates are the same. Front sheetmetal gets bigger with the 1 1/2-ton trucks (for Chebby) and the 1 1/4-ton (for GMC).

Even though the question seemed to be answered here, it came up yet again in newer post. I thought I would add another picture showing the difference between the little and big truck hoods.

Hood halves.

The big truck hood half is on the left, and although the top of the pic is cut off (I wasn't the photographer), one can see that the big truck hood is at least 6" (maybe a little more) longer than the little one.

The grills are taller also, harder to come by. You should have no trouble getting rid of the parts.Advertise them in the swap section, ebay would be good also.
