I have a head # 3836850 which I believe is a 1958 261. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Jim Carter lists the numbers in a technical article on his website (he does not allow links to the articles). He lists your number as being a 261 head from any year that a 261 was made (1954-1962). | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 | Yes, my lists show the head as a 261. Only other clue would be the date code to narrow down the year. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 43 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 43 | | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | Was that head used on 235 also. If I have a engine with that head & its never been messed with than I can assume its a 261? They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. A 848 came from a 235 engine. When I put a 261 back together out of 2, one of them had a 848 head on it. The previous owner wanted to increase compression by using the 235 head on the 261. Instead the water passages didn't mate and caused overheating and engine failure. Check the engine numbers and specs with your machinist before you rebuild.
