I have searched the gallery trying to determine which years came with vent windows and which did not. All years in the gallery have trucks with and without vent glass???? I have a 54 1/2ton and would like to eliminate the vent window for one solid sheet of glass. Can I use the glass from an earlier year to acomplish this? and what year??

I believe 51 was the first year of the vent windows. So, anything prior to that would have had the one piece windows.

If I'm not right, I'm sure someone will jump in here real quickly and correct me.

As for the glass, once you've either changed or modified your doors to accept the full window, I think you'd probably be better off to just have new glass cut, rather than trying to fool around and find half decent used glass.

Most any auto glass company, or regular glass company for that matter, should be able to cut you a couple of windows fairly inexpensively.

I have seen the parts to change these windows to a single pane listed on E-bay. I just went back and did a search to no avail.

The fellow that puts these kits together used to frequent this site...everyone knows him. He seems to use different ID's. I know him as Mothertrucker, and that is how he sells on E-bay.

I am not sure, but I think that he is creeping around the "Parts for Sale" forum as PartsIzParts! If that isn't him, do an advanced search on E-bay using "search by seller" and enter Mothertruckertrucks, and hit search completed items.

Look around there..he has everything for these old trucks. Don't ask too many questions and cash up front!!! Good luck.

1951 was the first year of the vent windows and the first year without the cowl side vent. To change the windows will take some doing. It is not only the glass but also the channel, some internal bracing in the door and the window regulators (crank mechanism) which are different. The single glass doors had a metal frame around the glass. If I was determined to go to a single pane door I wood try to find a door that had them already. You would in that case loose your push button door handles as all the single glass doors had pull down handles.

'51-'87 (for the most part...'91 on some models).

'51 doors are one-year-only and rare. Someone here about gave me a seizure a few months ago when they said they converted a set to remove the vent windows.

If you don't care about keeping the push-button handles, just get a set of '47.2-'50 doors and change the striker plates. If you want to keep the push button handles, I'd find a set of complete but battered '47.2-'50 doors, cut the skins off, and start the conversion there.

So where does that put my 1952 Chevy Suburban? Vent windows and turn down handles. Vin # says it was built November 1951.

I got a set of solid '51 doors.

I dislike vent windows, but I prefer push button handles.

Here's two #'s for people that sell vent window eliminator kits: Hagan (Carson City NV) 775-885-1969 and Hardy (Ft Worth, TX) 817-228-8824. I think Hagan or maybe both have web sites.

Regarding the vent window conversions.. think it would be easier to just trade out for doors without vent windows.. just a matter of adjusting. My husband doesn't like vent windows and would just as soon eliminate them on our '53. I am torn. Guess they are only any good if you'll still a smoker? LOL Which I am not.. but the truck came that way, should we leave it? What do you purists have to say about them vent windows yay or nay and whats the pro or con.. am curious?
