For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 37 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 37 | This should be really easy but I'm having some difficulty with my track style underbed spare tire carrier assembly, (1949 Chevy 3100 truck). I think this style was used from 41 to 50. Later mounts were of the pivot type or side mount. Anyway, the 47-54 factory assembly manual does not show the track carrier, only the pivot type. Please email if you can help me understand exactly how this assembly works, perhaps we can trade some pictures because it's difficult to convey in text. Here's an attempt to verbalize the issue - the main carrier bracket slides onto the underbed track and rests nicely at the end of the track. It this position, the J-hook looks perfect and hangs perfectly vertical and into the other end of the main bracket-mounting hole. There's a smaller adapter bracket that gets mounted to the frame bracket and cradles the wheel/tire assembly. This smaller adapter bracket straddles the main bracket and can apparently slide up and down the main bracket. Trouble is that the adapter bracket does not appear to be in the "correct" position - there are stop tabs in the main bracket that are spaced to receive the adapter bracket. In my case, the adapter bracket does not align properly with the main bracket stop tabs. There's maybe a 2-inch offset. If I slide the main bracket down the track slightly so the stop tabs align with the adapter bracket, the J-hook is on a severe angle and does not look correct. Thanks for any help. I have pictures if that might help. Hopefully one of you has more detailed pictures of a correctly installed carrier. 49trucknut

I'll email you a picture of my finished/installed assembly. I only need to move my tail pipe to allow for the tire... I can provide other pictures if you are curious about a specific area of the carrier. You can also find a similar thread at the ChevyDuty forum where I was able to post pictures. 49trucknut

I think ours is different that the later '40s version. Do you have photo of your 1940 carrier? ALl I have on mine is the track under the bed. I just added a photo in my webshots album, 1940 GMC folder. http://community.webshots.com/user/ndnchf Steve | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,682 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,682 | ndnchf,
Your spare track looks just like the one on my '46 1/2 ton.. I don't have anything but the track, either!
an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.
