I have the heavy duty, granny low, 4spd in my 61 and I am wondering if there are any other manual transmissions that would fit this thing. Particularly I am looking for somewthing with an overdrive, maybe even a 5spd? I am thinking of replacin the 4spd, and regearing the rearend altogether. I really want to be able to drive my truck on the highway at 65-70 and not feel like I am going to make it blow up, thoughts and ideas appreciated

An S10 T5 would work fine and you could keep your original rear end which is probably 3.90? With the .70 overdrive your final gear would be 2.73

gaffbro - how much modification does the t-5 require? what do i need to change to mount it to my 61 235? is it hydraulic? do i need to modify crosmembers? driveline modifications? suggested years and models of s-10's to hunt for? is this the same t-5 that the camaros and other gm's have? i am new to this and unfamiliar with the t-5. any help and or suggestion would be appreciated. thanks for the post.

The tech tips on this websight has a good section on this. There have been many posts. you should be able to bring them up on a search.

an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.

With that granny gear 4 speed I'd consider 3.08:1 gears. The ratio on that granny gear is something like 7:1, so even with 3.08:1 gears you still have PLENTY of grunt power available, and you could run down the hiway nicely.

boo
