I've got nice 15" rims all around the '46 1/2 ton and I really want to put stock hubcaps on.. but stock hubcaps need to have those little tab deals on the rims.. and these rims don't have 'em!

So the question is.. how does one go about putting those stock hubcaps on rims without the little clips?

What came to mind was trying to find new clips (or score old ones off old rims i've got laying around) and have somebody tack weld them on the newer rims.. but I thought i'd check here for ideas or alternatives.

Of course I could always get a few tubes of GOOP and just epoxy the hubcaps on the rims, but thats a little to redneck even for me!

So lets here your ideas and suggestions!

Fumblin - if the rims yer usin are newer GM [but not tooo new], they may have the holes already for the little clips to mount [present for many years after they quit using them], and the correct clips are available from the repro places

Yes you can mount 4 clips on newer rims and make the stock cap fit. Some may wish to because they can not run disc brakes on stock rims
i;ll get back to you for a web site

55 to 59 or so pickup 15 inch rims will accept your older hub caps. Most any swap meet has these in abundance.

Replacing the rims may be the way I have to go.

I replaced my 15", 8 lug, split rims with "newer" (don't know how new) 16" rims that I found at a junk yard. I like the look of the original hubcaps but they won't fit on my new rims. What are my hubcap options for 16" 3/4 ton rims?

The little spring clips are just that...springs! You don't want to WELD on those or they will be "just little clips"...no spring!

Fumblin. You can put clips on the newer rims. I put mine on with 3/16 bolts, drilled and tapped the rims, then ground the end off the bolts flush. I've also seen them welded on without any problems. The temper of the clips isn't that bad.

Tab - Your hubcap options will depend on which rims you have. If they are GM, the old caps should fit if you add the clips. Otherwise, you will end up with caps that say brand X on them.

I have modern (?) 15 x 8 , 6 lug wheels on my '52 and installed the clips to be able to use the original style hubacps and trim rings.
Hi Fumblin,

I drilled and tapped four 10-32 holes in each wheel and used 1/2" spacers to get the clips to the proper elevation to engage the rim of the hubcaps. A little adjustment is necessary, but anyone with a 'bolt' knows how to bent and tweak a little to make stuff fit. You can see what they look like on the 2006 Bolt calander, November, or check them out on my webshot page.

Hi Fumblin, again.

Sorry for the first post where I stuck the greeting halfway down. Also, I don't have the hubcap pictures on my webshot page yet, but she is on the calander.

Hi Fumblin,

I now have the hubcap photos on my webshot page. Also, I will post a few photos of the wheel mods this weekend if you are interested.

Those clips are interesting but my hubcaps are really tall because my truck is a 3/4 ton. Will these clips hold them securely? They don't look strong enough to me.

Tab - I added a spacer about 1/8" thick under the clips. The wheels are from a 91 gm 3/4 ton and have a deeper well.
First the hubcap.

My first thought was to bolt or tack weld clips on, but I wasn't sure how cool drilling and tapping rims was!

All four rims I have on the truck now are nice black and just right.. except for the clips!

Looks like i'll be going the drill & tap route.. now to find a set of four decent hubcaps for a '46!

Thank you everyone for your comments and suggestions!
