| | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 2,254 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 2,254 | The 53 never lets me get bored. Today I got the engine to turn completely over but is a little stiff. Good sign. But the oil had some booger stuff in it and a little water. Not good.
So, I went out and looked at the truck. I have the box and front fenders off. On the rear axle one side had a plate on top. Only one side. I looked in the 47-54 assembly manual and saw nothing of the sort. What is it? Should there have been these plates on both side? And were there springs on top of them? The springs are mounted on the bottom of the axle like it shows in the book.

is a bracket on the passenger side that is used
to mount the brake line "t" fitting. The brake
line hose connects at this point.

A small amount of water is also nothing to worry about, as condensation will have settled in the sump over the time that the truck's been sitting idle.

The plate that I spoke of looks like it holds the springs (helper springs?) on the top of axle.
Are these helper springs important?
