i just purchased a 1940 chevy pick up, is there a frame swap possible. someone had said a s10 frame will work. im not sure, it does not look like it would. if i could get some info from you guys who have these pick ups it would be helpfull. if i could get the wheel base, length things of that nature it would be cool. thanks a bunch.

Tim,

What do you want to do with your 40? You can do a large number of modifications to the original frame/running gear. Simple would be swap the rear end out and add discs. Radical would be a clip chop or mustang II front end. What kind of shape is your 40 in? Does the original motor run?

Most important, do you have pictures of your truck to post?

i dont have pics. the frame is kind of rough the guy i bought it off put a plymoth valarie front clip on it. i want to turn it into a street rod i have an LS1 engine or i would put an LT1 in it. if an s10 frame fits under the truck ill go that route. just want to see what other people are doing. i would have put a mustang 2 clip in except the valari clip has already been welded in place. there alot of work just to cut out all the braketry that is on the front now. it does have a dana 60 rear end. but i have a ford 9" that might do the job. it has discs and 3.73 gears already.

55belairtim,

Here is what I'm doing to my 1940. Not an s-10 frame or anything.

Anything to get more 1940's on the road.

A Volarie or Mustang II front end seems to be a common mod to most of the old iron to upgrade the suspension and front brakes.

Not sure why some folks prefer the one over the other.. seems like you could rod either one just as easy, but i'm not a rodder.. so I dunno.

I've often thought that if I was ever going to upgrade the suspension and brakes in an old truck that the s10 longbed swap would be the way to go, and i'm positive it's possible.

They make a "kit" for putting '47 thru '54 trucks on the s10 longbed frame, and we have at least one fellow floating around on here putting a '40's panel on an s10 frame.. so why not a '40?

an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.

thanks for the advice someone local told me about the valari front end said they have heard of others using it. if any of you guys have dimensions of the widthe of the front two tires this would help me out. this truck is a 3/4 ton but i plan on shortening it up some to make it a 1/2 ton. i probably will go with the s10 chassie if it will work. i plan to build this truck as a street rod. with an LT1 or LS1 engine with a 4L60E trans. i have a ford 9" with 3.73 i plan to use that for the back. if anybody knows of a place that makes fenders ill need 2 of them. i prefer steel. i have seen the fiberglass ones but steel is easier to weld than fiber.
thanks a bunch you guys.
ps if i decide to use the s10 chassie i give up the stock chassie. also has a dana 60 rear end.

I think the frames are the same up to 46,I have heard some bad things about S10 frame swaps. I know a couple of people that bought late 30s cars on S10 chasis's that put a original back under them. Jeff

We must be careful here "horse trading"... the boss will get mad at us.... Sorry Skipper...

The Ox is a Rusty Rod, and doesnt have a stock drive train and never will...

I'm leaning way over on a Nova rear suspension.

sorry about the trading guys im new to this web. but now what i have planned is to build one as a driver ( something you dont have to worry about when you go to town or school that cars for my brother) we got 2 cabs in the deal so i plan to take the other cab and turn it into a street rod. with an LT1 or LS1 with a 4L60E trans with a ford 9" out back. im going to build my own chassie for this truck which is not a problem for me. ill post some pics for you guys when i get the cabs to my house. i appretiate any advice on where to go to get parts. sheet metal body parts. id like to stay away from fiberglass if possible.

thanks for the info
