Fired it up again this afternoon for about 2 minutes just to make sure I wasn't imaginging things last night.. it came without a fan, and has a seized generator (big dent in the bottom), so i've gotta replace those things and put some coolant in it before I dare run it any longer than that.
The good news is during it's two minute run today she idled all on her own, and when i'd goose it, the vac advance for the distributer seemed to work fine.. smooth running and no backfires.
Once I get the fan, generator, and belt on it, i'll try moving it and see what happens.. that outta be in the next couple hours.

I remember the generator case as being almost a 1/4" thick, add to that the field coils and it seems like it would be impossible to dent the thing! Must have happened OFF the engine! Fan on, generator on, belt on, stomped on the foot starter and she popped right off.
Hopped in, put it in gear.. nothing.
Lifted the floor pan, and whadda ya know.. the u-joint is open. No bolts, no nothing to hold the joint together.
Let me take a moment to say that TORQUE TUBE STUFF SUCKS!
There.. I feel much better.
Now I have to source a supplier for the bolts and berrings I need to put the joint back together.

Stuart. Yea, I was pretty suprised to see the dent, too.. considering how heavy duty these generators are. In addition to being heavy steel, theres a "pan" underneath it when mounted.. so I doubt something like road debris could have caused the dent. The engine does look like it's had some head work done, there wasn't a fan on it, and the driveshaft was disconnected from the tranny.. perhaps a previous owner had the engine out to do some work and dropped it while it was out?
