I just got an original oil bath air cleaner for my 54, which did not have one when I got it. Upon opening it to clean it, the inside appears stuffed with a horsehair like material, looks sorta like wood shavings. Is that supposed to be there, or was that the work of the critter who also deposited some dog food nuggets in there? Theres no oil residue in there, either. Sure looks good though...

Yeah the horsehair stuff is supposed to be there, what I'm not sure of is how "full" it is supposed to be. Mine calls for 50wt oil. Brian

There is a line showing the oil level. About a pint on the standard size filter. We always used 30 weight oil back when that was the only kind of air filter there was.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Thanks, fellas -
that settles my mind, i saw there was no way to open the innards of the thing, and now I also see the oil line. I gave away a 68 Volkswagen bus I had a few years ago, and it had an oil bath filter. Must be losing my memory, and I am only 44, LOL!!
Garry.
