The crack is on the front side. As it sits now, there is no weight stressing the crack. If the truck was put up on a lift and the wheels allowed to hang, the weight of the axle would pull down the shackle and exert a force that pulls the crack apart. The metal that surrounds the shackle is where the crack is. I hope this paints a pretty good picture of where it is at. I obviously want to get this fixed, but I was wondering what you guys thought about the urgency of the problem. Can I drive on it without worrying too much? As long as i take it easy? Not a good idea to drive it at all? Also, do you know of any online vendors or good salvage yards in Illinois that I could get a replacement part from?

I removed the bracket and took it to a machine shop. They drilled it, machined an insert and welded it together. Now replacing the bushing will be no problem. This might be a solution to your problem. | | |

In other words, the airplane stays on the ground until it's fixed. I wouldn't want to go over a bump and have the shackle break and lose control.

there is always a reason why metal cracks and it is usually a combination of corrosion and stress. If there is enough corrosion, the metal cannot perform it's job and failure results. Even though it may not look like it, the crack is evidence that the hanger is in failure mode. As far as replacing it goes, it should not be a problem to find a good used one. | | |

If it is on the right and it fails you would be automatically pulling over to the right. If it is on the left of the truck you would be pulled into oncoming traffic. Sure, I would say, just drive it till it quits.
