I finally fixed my throttle woes! In, like, 5 mins.

If you'll remember I'd complained about not having enough throttle to open the secondaries on the 4 barrel sitting on my 292. Throttle response was okay but not sensitive or crisp. Now it's very crisp, but not overly sensitive. I found there was enough room for adjustment to get about another half inch or so of throttle. The first quarter inch or so of throttle was only to take the slack out of unit. After that you opened the primaries. Now that slack has been removed and another quarter inch or so of new throttle has been found. The difference is very noticeable.

I just went for a 6 mile test drive down the interstate. Before the adjustment acceleration was okay (at best) on level paveway and non-existent on inclines. Now the acceleration is great in overdrive on inclines. Awesome on level grounds and downhill. Acceleration in first, second and third gears has improved exponentially also.

Well, that's it for the drivetrain. Next up - replacing the wood bed. eek eek

Way to go Fred! I was disappointed when you said your motor was a slug . . . thinking that I might have the same experience after all the work I have done on my 292. Glad to hear you figured it out - nothing better than being pressed back in the seat when you stomp on the accelerator. smile

Ken.

I absolutely cannot imagine the power your 292 will have eek ! I've actually contemplated booking a flight and making a cross country trip just to see its first run. If the tutoring business we just started takes off, who knows.... wink

Ken you have higher compression and the lump port head. I don't know what you're doing for intake and exhaust but you'll probably be absolutely stunned with the acceleration. Make sure you have a solidly built rear. I have the stock 3.73 and turn 2600 rpms at 80 mph. After the adjustments this evening, getting to 80 was easy. And I still don't think I ever opened the secondaries! eek

Congrats. I'm just working out the kinks in my new 4 barrel setup. I was changing jets, and the last secondary jet is stuck as hell and mutilated. Now I'm at a standstill. Oh, well.

BTW, what's your setup? Congrats again. John

Big John,

I have a .060 bored 292 with stock type pistons (about 8:1 CR). Performance goodies are an Offenhauser single 4 barrel intake with an Edelbrock 500 cfm electric choke carb, HEI distributor, long tube headers & RV type cam. The head was rebuilt back to stock specs.

If I had it to do over again I would at least bump up the compression ratio (CR) and give the head a good port & polish. Ken is extremely patient and is doing his 292 right the first time.

FT, at the rate I am going it wont be till fall  I have a clifford intake and a holly 450 that truckedup rebuilt and shipped to me in trade for me shipping him an OD tranny.

I plan to have either a 3.73 or a 4.11 posi 12 bolt. I also have a V8-T5 tranny with .63:1 OD - so I am thinking 4.11 would be about right in an AD suburban.

My biggest problem is finding time to work on it while getting all my other chores done. Lisa wants a garden, I have 3 kids in baseball, I want to plant grass in the back yard and work continues to gather speed like a freight train. . . but when it is done - you are more than welcome to be present for the lighting off ceremony. grin
