Finally getting around to doing the back brakes. The manual calls for packing the bearings which I don't get. Isn't all that area filled with gear oil on a C20?

Just going from memory, I think most of the axle rebuild material says grease them so that they are not running dry until any of the gear oil makes its way out there.
Depending on the hubs, you may not have to pull them to take the drums off. See if you have two big slotted screw heads that are flush with the surface, between a couple of the wheel studs.

Thanks Richard. I didn't remove the bearings. I greased 'em and used compressed air to pack it in there. All the stuff was in really good shape including the shoes and cylinders. Doesn't surprise me as the previous owner obviously did a lot of work on the rear suspension and axle.
Those back drums are heavy!
