For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 40 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 40 | I just got my 46 chevy running. I tool the tie rod and drag link apart can cleaned up. I saw that they were very egg shapped. I want to replace them, and ordered the kit from bow tie. I got the ones that bolt in.
So before I fet stuck, how do I get the old ones out??
I also want to confirm a few things. I have a 3/4 ton dr series, wtih 8 bolt wheels. I believe that I have the correct tie rod ends, (differnt than the 1/2 ton) But I am confused with which drag link rebuild kits I need.
Thanks

In fact, the tie rod ends are the same for 1937-47 All Commercial except DS & ES 1 tons. To remove the ball from the steering arms, center punch and drill the base of the ball. I think a 1/2 inch drill is about right. Once you remove enough of the base, you can use a punch to drive the ball out. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,195 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,195 | Here are a few tips I ran found worked for me. Use a drill or drill press and spin the new ball ends, then using valve lapping compound, hold the sockets to the ball with finger pressure only. This will knock off the edges and help seat the sockets to the ball. Mine were made in China so they weren't the best fit to each other. I also had to cut the threads part way off the front draglink ball ends due to clearance with the axle. I just heated up the remaining threads and peaned them in like the originals were. This was on a '37 so yours may have more room, but check to make sure! Joe | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 40 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 40 | Thanks for the tips. Are the drag link ends also the same?
