Its always the easy stuff that drives you crazy...

Trying to disassemble my 58's column shifter for cleaning and painting. Have looked at the factory assembly manual, and it appears that the pivot pins should depress enough to remove the shift lever. Mine do not. Is there a secret to this known only to advanced Stovebolters that one of you might share with me??

Secondly, does the upper support screw off the end of the shifter shaft? The manual shows threads, but again, mine does not want to budge.

those little pins can be a pain to get in far enuff to get the lever free - requires kinda levering up the levers sheet metal while pushing in one pin until you can wiggle it enuff to get it wedged under a bit, then repeat on the 2nd - if that's clear! the upper elbow will unscrew after you've got the lever off - keep at it, but keep track of the parts!! there's a little springy thingy w/ the pins on the ends, and a wire spring that'll fly across the room w/ very little reason!

Went at it again when I got home last night and finally got it apart by levering it as you said. It was full of something that looked like a mixture of snuff and cosmolene which had hardened over the previous 47 years which was making it hard to get it apart.
