It appears to be a 235 with a 4 speed. Is there a good way of knowing what kind of shape the transmission is in, besides putting a good motor in it and driving it? Is there a good source for rebuild 235's. I was considering rebuilding it myself but have never done it before. How hard is a rebuild going to be for a guy that has never rebuilt and engine before? Sorry for all the questions, just want to do my homework before I start tearing stuff apart. | | |

What 235 are you running? The 54-62 or the splash oiled variety?
What do you want to do with this truck?
If the engine is already out of the truck and is a full oiler 54-62 235, I would buy a book or two and give rebuilding a try. The machine shop will do your block and head work. But all of the parts and work will still cost you some money.
As far as the tranny goes, if you are building a daily driver, drop in a GM T-5 out of an S-10 and a different rear end and increase the speed of your ride. If you are going for stock, you could try a tranny shop to take a peak inside to see how your gear box looks.....
Lots of options depending on what you want to spend. If you have the $$ someone out there can do almost anything you want.... | | |

Does this transmission just fit with this engine, or is there specialty stuff to make it work. I would like to have a daily driver. If you find the # near the dipstick and post that on here, someone will be able to tell you what engine you are running.
If you have not checked the tech tips section above, there are a couple of articles on the T-5. Here in MN, the T-5s are hard to come by. I have a line on one but have to figure out a way to get it....truck is heading for the crusher...I can't buy the whole thing....hopefully the tranny can come out before it goes to China.......
Someone may have diffent opinions....but you will spend the same if not more rebuilding your six than a V-8....I don't mean "build a V-8 instead"......just something to compare it to.
If your head has not been updated, good time to install the hardened seats and all that stuff..
