Iput new points in my 235,changed the wires, check the gap 3 times. Its set at .019.It starts right up andsounds good at idle but runs rough at high rpms. What have i done wrong.i checked and rechecked the fireing order.Ive sinse lowered the points to .018,still rough at high revs. Also tried a different rotor.

Check the ignition timing. a 1 degree change in dwell (determined by the point gap) changes ignition timing 2 degrees. You might have it over-advanced at high RPM.

Bushings may be "gone" in your dizzy, causing your dwell to vary wildly.........check with engine running and meter connected. Idle dwell may look okay, but increase RPM's to see if the meter starts to fluctuate. This is a common problem on old or highmileage engines.
If you don't have a dwell meter, borrow one..........either that, or pull the dizzy out, put it in a "soft-jaw" vise and check for lateral play and excessive run-out in the bushings.
Distributor can be rebuilt or just find one that isn't as worn.

Also, how worn down is the cam that opens the points? If it's worn down enough it will not run well above an idle. Lack of coil saturation.

These are only suggestions and are only worth what you paid for them wink smile .

All of the problems started after i fixed it :DThis engine has run great for the last year.I had the distributor out and it seems ok.The advance is working. After it didnt start a week ago i checked all electrical conections and put in new points.Moveing the distributor doesnt get rid of the problem.

My old 235 starting missing at higher RPM's such as just before shifting to the next gear. I cleaned out the hardened grease in the grease cup on the distributor and put new grease in it. That solved my problem.

Hey Slow rider,
I recently placed a new 235 into my 49 Chevy truck, and when we got it running, it did the same thing. I did all the same things you did, and just couldn't figure out why it missed when we reved up the engine. The coil was the only thing I hadn't replaced. I put a new coil on it, and it solved the problem. Just a thought!
