I hope this isn't against anyone's religion or considered an abomination of nature, but I have this nice '72 4X4 with a 350 about to wheeze its last, and a ready-for-the-junkyard E250 with the world's smoothest, torquiest and loveliest 460 engine and C-6.

I'm wondering if a **** big block swap into an old Chev truck has been done, if anyone here has done it, and if you could tell me where to go to find out more about it.
. . . or just tell me where to go.

If you want something nice and fun, wrap your arms around a big block 502.Thats a nice toy to have, but its an expensive one.Since your at a junkyard get another 350 and smother it with goodies, that way a priest wont have to come down and pardon your truck for its misdeeds J/K.

Kick me out if you want, but hey, why not? If I had two junkers layin' around and I could make a driver that cost nothing to build, who cares? Personally I'd like to see the look on people faces when you pop the hood on the beast. Farmer some motor and trans mounts together with the scrap steel you have behind the shop, and display "Proud to be a Redneck" in the back window. I've never seen a big block F*** in a Chevy. At Good-Guys in Puyalip this summer there was a '50-ish panel with a small block F*** in it. At the Unfinished Nationals labor day weekend there was an AD pickup with a F*** in it. Actually its possible that one was a big one...

I wouldn't do it if it were me. But getting past the religious aspects, a big Chevy or any big GM motor will go in easier. Easier to adapt the your existing drive train. Easier to wire. Easier to adapt accessories to.

And then when the day comes to sell it...

Alot of chevys have mustang front ends and 8 or 9 inch rears and alot of other vehicles have chevy motors so what the heck go for it and be different. I am considering installing a 300 six in my 37 if the 235 dies,there are alot more 300s running around than 250s or 292s and I dont like V6s as they vibrate and have no torque. You could also use a 472/500 caddy or a 455 olds/pontiac or buick if you cant afford a BBC,all of the big GMs had big blocks as standard equipment,a big block was optional even in a C60. If chevy was not so stingy to make the big blocks optional in most big cars and trucks they would be more common and affordable like the 350s are,I never could understand why a big block was not standard equipment in a caprice or a C30 and bigger truck.

I knew a guy that did a swap like this and he liked it, but he is F**D man. He did this swap in a 76 Chevy Club cab pickup. He later decided he wanted 4WD, and the F**d drivetrain would not permit this crossbreeding, so he then changed back to a 454 and turbo 400 tranny. The latest incarnation I heard he did was swap a 5.9L Cummins drivetrain for the 454.

This proves the theory that with a torch and welder, any swap is possible, but if you figure all the little stuff included in a swap, particularly in a brand A to brand B swap, your time really has to be cheap to make this work.

Hmmm, Racecarl if the original questions was about putting a f*** in a 4x4 Chevy your friend's experience might suggest this is a really bad idea.

Do you know why he wasn't able to run 4-wheel-drive?

I once owned a '52 GMC with a f*** bed and Dodge 4x4 running gear....

I believe it has to do with the fact that **** and chevy run the front driveshaft on opposite sides of the vehicle. Can't do much about that without swapping out the axle.

4onthefloor, you are exactly correct. The 460 swap was AFTER he converted the original 2WD to 4WD using Chevy parts, so he wasn't too thrilled about changing out the front axle again. In addition, he just couldn't bring himself to hack up the Chevy enough to install the twin I-beam front end. I know many hours were spent trying to figure out how to rotate the F**d transfer case to run the driveshaft on the Chevy side, but to no avail. When he was running the 460, the front axle was not hooked up.

All that would take would be a frud straight axle front end and the comparable 205 or 203 transfer-case. Maybe cross-over steering and some interesting T-case shifter mounting
