OK made you look. What the heck motor is this? I bought this thing sight unseen for a song and am picking it up in the am. The vin says it is a 68 satellite. I think this is a big block 383 or something. Mopar fans let me know.

The fifth character of the VIN is the engine displacement for the original engine. Your engine is probably a 440, but it could be a 383. The 440 will have a raised, machined pad parallel to the floor, to the right of the distributor as you're looking at the engine. The 383 pad is to the right of the distributor, also, but is at an angle. Either way, the displacement will be stamped on that pad. Here's your possibilities: 361, 383, 400 if a "B" engine; 413, 426 Wedge, or 440 if an "RB" engine. If the engine displacement matches the VIN character, you can check the passenger's side of the block on a machined pad above the oil pan rail to see if this is the original block; the last eight digits of the VIN will be stamped there.

The vin shows to be a 318. I know that's not true. Is there one that is better than others in the mopar world? It has an edelbrock manifold and edelbrock electric choke carb. I will look at all possible engine castings when I pick it up. The info you gave me is good thanks.

It looks like someone took a 318 Satellite and built themselves a nice little Mopar street machine with a 440. You're not going to lose anything by leaving it like it sits; in fact, the previous owner didn't go jacking around with an original Road Runner or GTX and instead, did up what looks like a straight little Satellite. The first two letters of the VIN tell you what you have: RP=Satellite; RS=GTX; RM=Road Runner, RH=Belvedere II; RL=Belvedere I.

I park my son's Chevy truck next to my Mopars, too.

It's an RH. A good story goes along with the car which I'll tell upon delivery to my driveway.

I got the whole thing in my garage. As soon as I find my reading glasses I'll see if I can find any numbers on the block. I stopped by a guy who is a Mopar nut and he said he's 90% sure it's a 383. Great day to pick up a car......windy, raining, and 35 degrees. Stovebolt on one side and mopar on the other. Who could ask for anything more?

It is indeed 68 as per round side marker lights.69 had square reflectors and 70 had squared lights. It is a big block, can't tell if raised block (440,413,426 edge) or low block (361,383,400) there is a pad next to distributor that will show CID. also if paralell to intake valley rail, it is RB. If it is paralell to head surface it is B engine (low block)

OK it's official. I have a bill of sale and the money has been accepted. Now to get it running. It turns over but was sitting in a pool of tranny fluid. Short version. It came from a courthouse sale and I bought it from the person who bought it at the sale. I really wanted to find another chevelle or other gm product so the whole family could fit in it for car shows. I'll settle for what I got this for.

I also removed an orange extension cord that was spliced on the + side of the battery to the trunk and there are 3 12-15" speakers in the package tray. Any way thanks to all that replied. I still havn't found any block id numbers but really havn't looked that hard and will as time allows. I'm just thrilled to get the car.

Three possibilities on the source of the tranny puddle - 1) The rear seal, 2) the front seal, and 3) the shifter shaft seal that goes in the tranny from the end of the linkage. Easy fixes, all.

Thanks Patrick 66. I have worn out my garage time for a while so until then I'm not tackling the tranny problem. I still can't get over teh fact he had an orange extension cord feeding power to the trunk for stereo stuff so it's hard telling what else has been done half way on the car. Not running, the dipstick still reads full on fluid. It could be possible when it got hauled to the impound garage that they parked it in a puddle.
