I'm finally back after 2-3 hours fixing the mayhem caused by the msblast worm. Someone needs to find the guy and use his head for a mop and his butt for a broom!

I did a compression check on my 49 3600, it has a 55 235 6cyl engine. The cylinder farthest back, I don't what the number of the cylinder would be had 0 compression. The other five ranged between 125-127psi. The engine runs rough but does not smoke. Any advice on what the problem may be?

Thanks!!

Valve problem. Turn the engine over until it is in #6 TDC. The rotor will point to the #6 plug wire terminal on the distributor cap. Both valves will be closed. Shoot some air into the cyliinder and listen to the intake and the exhaust to see where the air is escaping--that is the valve not seating.

Racecarl,

Thanks for the input. I'll try what you suggest. However, I may just pull the head and have it fixed. Are rebuilt heads available?

My suggestion is to first run a compression check as you did, then add a tablespoon or so of oil to each cylinder and recheck. If there is a significant difference in the wet/dry readings the problem will be rings or pistons. If no change it is likely valve related. Then check valve clearances, rocker arm condition and cam lift. You still might need to pull the head, but at least you will know why!

It would be best not to pull the head until you know what's wrong, if possible. Diagnosis can be tough with the head off.
