Hello,
I'm restoring a 53 Chev truck. Possibly a one ton. The floor in the bed has deteriorated to the point where I can't tell what kind of wood it is. I'm sure someone out there will know whether the originals were oak, pine, hemlock ???
Thanks,
GaBe

Original were pine painted black. Most use unpainted wood of your choice during restoration.

GaBe,

Before you buy wood for your bed, check the price of the wood that you will need and compare it to the bed wood from Chevy Duty. The wood for my '65 bed plus shipping was cheaper than the wood cost at Lowes and it was already routed and ready to finish and install. Also, check the price of a complete bed kit that comes with the strips and bolts. Probably the cheapest route. They have both pine and oak. If you are going to keep the truck a long time and it will be in the weather, I would suggest oak. If you are going to show it, You might want polished stainless steel strips. Have a good day.

Hey Gabe, did you try searching the forums? There was a couple of threads on bed wood last September. Just enter "bed wood" in the search field.

Hey GaBe, What series is your truck. That will tell for sure, wheather it's a 1 Ton or not. If the series designation emblems are not on the hood, the gvw rating on the ID tag, in the driver door jamb, will tell you.

If it's a one ton, the bed is 9 feet long. 3/4 ton bed is 7-1/2 feet.
