For Missouri Bolters.

I am contemplating a new project and have some title questions.

How would you title a truck if the seller does not have a title and you get only a bill of sale?

How would you title a truck you put together a piece at a time. Cab from one place frame from another etc.

How would you title a truck you body swaped.

What if you bought a truck and got neither a bill of sale or a title?

Obviously a title with bill of sale is best but is it the only option?

Chris.

Chris - Lots of questions which have been asked in many ways over the years and for most every state across the country. smile

The one "best answer" to each of your questions, is to contact the MO DMV for specific guidance to meet regulatory and statutory requirements to be able to obtain a title in each instance, if it's permitted by law.

You can start by accessing and reading what MO has posted for public consumption at the MO Dept of Revenue Motor Vehicle web page. Through there you also have the ability to submit questions to get detailed answers not covered under the general information posted in those pages.

PS - I've moved your post to the MBA Bolters forum as the best place for your location specific questions. wink

Though the website was a dead end. I rememberd the term "bonded title" did a web search, sure enough I can get one in the event there is no title. still would need a bill of sale and work through some red tape.
As for putting a truck together a piece at a time or a body swap I will have to find a MODOT phone number and see what I can find.

Just don't want to buy a project and find out its only good for parts due to MO laws. In essence, know what to avoid.

so far.
No title, no bill of sale. only buy for parts.
Bill of sale with no title. Posible bonded title
Body Swap. unknown
Built a piece at a time. Unknown

I will post what I find as I go.
Chris

I titled my truck in 2000 here in Lees Summit Mo. I had the original title my brother in law got back in 1969 when he purchased the truck. Problem was it was never signed over to him, still had the original owners name on it who had passed away sometime in the '70s. I had the truck road ready and went to the DMV, they freaked out and said I needed receipts and or titles for every part on the truck before they would even begin to look into getting it titled. I explained the engine came from a salvage yard and they don't give out titles with engines, same with the transmission. They sent me home to collect what I could. I had my friend write up a bill of sale for the engine and trans, I had someone else write one for the rear axle, then went back with all the receipts from the part I purchased, I saved all of them. They still wouldn't title it due to the original title mistake back in '69.

I made an appointment in Jeff City at the DMV, they looked over the papers and with in 20 minutes had it figured out and I was on my way. I needed a 3 year bonded title, cost wasn't too much per year, and I needed the Highway Patrol to look over the truck and give it a new VIN number, the 12 digit like a trailer would get, once that was done, the state issued a new title and tags. The highway patrol verified the engine and trans wasn't stollen, and it was road worthy. Since it was a '37, there were no serial numbers on the cab or frame to look for.

It took about three months to get it done, I should have verified the title when I got the truck, but it was at my brother in laws farm for so many years I never though it would be a problem.

My advise it to get the DMV involved sooner then later, save every receipt you get and get a bill of sale for all major parts.

You can get it titled if built piece by piece, you just need proof of purchase for every piece of it.

A friend of mine bought a vin plate for a 1950 F-1 and had a title search company do all the work to get a title. From there we built a complete truck with parts from everywhere. Had about 6 different cab's and set's of fenders, TCI chassis ect. beautiful truck when done, took about 3 years to complete. This is in California where everything is a pain to do concerning the DMV.

Joe,
Thank you for the breakdown of how you got your title. From what I read in the MO titling manual last night. receipts and bills of sale are the key to success when building a vehicle a piece at a time. Body swaps would require a copy front and back of both titles and or bills of sale. Of course at the users level finding someone at the local DMV who knows what is required is painful.

I have an Arkansas title for my 56 3100 (currently minus motor and trans in arkansas) can't get it titled here in Mo till I get it up here and have a trooper verify the vin.

Since it's there and I want something here, Im keeping my eye out for something with potential.

At least now I know what paperwork to get along the way.

Fast55. As far as I can tell, once I have a title I'm free to mod to my hearts content.

Chris
