I answered a Facebook Marketplace ad for a Chevy small block V8 bellhousing with the Stovebolt angled motor mount pads, one that's for the big SM 465 bearing retainer, at a really good price. When I went to pick it up, I noticed a rusty high speed grinder in the guy's scrap bin- - - -one that was originally used to finish grind brake drums on an old AMMCO brake lathe. For an extra $10.00, it followed me home. With some minor modifications, it's going to be the new tool post grinder for my lathe- - - - -something that would usually cost around $500.00! Similar to this one:

I have one of those grinders from back when we cut 16 1/2" truck drums. There always hot spots that the cutter jumps over. I recently sold most of my heavy truck shop equipment and I am going to sell the rest of it at auction next Thursday. I will keep the drum lathe because no one turns truck drums any more. But with old obsolete stuff turning a drum is sometimes the best alternative. After running over the road trucks for 62 years I am going to be glad to see my stuff go. And hopefully I can find time now to work on my old GMCs.
I've actually got another grinder, either identical to the one I got today, or at least very similar. It's virtually unused. I rescued it from the scrappers who hauled off an AMMCO brake lathe that was replaced by the school system where I worked when they "upgraded" my shop equipment. I wish there would have been a way to salvage the whole machine, but it would have required me to virtually steal it. Not a good career move! Jerry
