1954 235, while heating up the block around the lifter base, to get lifters out of a frozen engine, I got all lifters out but the last one in the back near the firewall. While gently tapping up on the head of the lifter, (like the others) the cap came off. I was about 1/4" out of the bore. I tried getting vise grips on the shell with heat again, but to no avail. The camshaft won't slide out because it is hitting the cam journal at the back. Not high enough to clear. Any suggestions from anyone on how or maybe a tool to pull that out? I'm really trying to save this motor.
Thanks for any help.........

I would keep spraying it with penitrating oil ,if you can wiggle it up and down to get it started ,maybe heat the block area around the lifter .

If you have the oil pan off, use a long, thin piece of round stock or a long tapered punch, maybe 1/4" or 5/16" and tap on the bottom of the lifter after heating the block around the lifter and using plenty of penetrating oil. You should be able to reach around beside the cam lobe with the probe and drive the lifter out from the bottom.

Oil pan is still on the motor, in the car. That's my last resort. But thanks for all the suggestions !

Tinkering with a locked up engine while it's still in the car is usually a monumental waste of time. Pull it out and do a proper disassembly and rebuild.

Yep sticking with the veterans on this one. Just trying to get the correct angle on something or working around something will take more time than pulling and doing it right.
Pull the engine. if you need a hoist or engine stand. Plenty of used on the general sales markets like fakebook or Graig or the bay. Hell skip the hassle and do the harbor freight thing. I have used mine on many non auto projects and it folds up pretty compact for what it is.

I'm jumping on the “Pull it out and do a proper disassembly and rebuild.” bandwagon. If your lifters are stuck that badly, you really need to do a through cleaning and inspection. Pull the engine and save yourself time and stress.
